Baku combines a very long waterfront run with narrow streets beside the old city walls. It first hosted Formula 1 as the European Grand Prix in 2016. The contrast between open straights and confined corners makes car setup an unusually visible compromise.

KEY SECTIONS
T1–2
Waterfront braking
Wide approaches at the end of the fast run contrast with the slow right-angle corners. Watch braking and exit traction together.
T8–12
The castle section
The circuit tightens as it climbs past the old city. Accurate placement leaves little room for an untidy line.
T16–20
The run back to the line
The final acceleration phase builds through fast bends towards the pits. An exit deficit can grow for a long time here.
Setup focus
The old town needs grip and confidence; the waterfront run rewards low drag. Sector splits can reveal which side of that compromise a team favours.
Racing focus
Watch the gap leaving Turn 16 before the long run to Turn 1. A strong slipstream can make a fight look very different by the braking zone.
